DDT was first prepared in 1873 but it was not until 1939 when Paul Muller at geigy pharmaceuticals in Switzerland discovered the effectiveness of DDT as an insecticide. It is synthesized by heating a mixture of chloral with chlorobenzene in the presence of concentrated H2SO4
